Miami Beach

Located in Miami-Dade County, on a barrier island, the city of Miami Beach has more than 89,900 residents. With Biscayne Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, Miami Beach has always drawn visitors to its beautiful beaches. Millions of tourists visit the area each year—many of them from New York and Montreal.

The city of Miami Beach was incorporated in 1915. Between 1923 and 1943, hundreds of Art Deco buildings were built in the area that is now known as the city’s Art Deco Historic District—an area comprising the highest number of Art Deco buildings in the world. The district was listed in the National Register of History Places in 1979, and each year a festival named “Art Deco Weekend” takes place in Miami Beach. Another annual festival, Art Basel, has become one of the most prominent art festivals on the East Coast.

A year-round attraction for residents and visitors alike is Lincoln Road, which is now a pedestrian mall lined with popular restaurants, shops, and cafes. The city’s South Beach area has become internationally famous for its nightlife and restaurant scene.

Miami Beach was prominently featured in the T.V. series “Miami Vice,” as well as in numerous movies, including “Scarface” and “The Birdcage.”
